Everyone can be a leader
There are many misconceptions about leadership.
One misconception is that only those "in charge" are capable of causing impact, such as creating a high-engagement workspace.
I'm in DC and I joined two friends for their first intramural kickball game. As we walked over, we saw the opposing team running laps and stretching in a huddle.
My friends' coach doesn't communicate much and is disinterested in his players. Although he successfully recruited an eager team, he didn't engage his group! (Sound familiar?)
We sat down on the track to stretch (I took off my boots for moral support haha!) and my friends' team sat on the bench. My friend Shae commented on how cohesive and legit the other team appeared. Unfortunately her coach did not engage the team at all!
Here's what I told her: "The coach doesn't have to be the one to initiate a group activity. I promise you if you walk over to your teammates right now, people will join you." Shae immediately walked over and asked the group if they wanted to stretch with her.
Here's what happened: 4-5 people walked over with her. The assistant coach joined in. I looked over 2 minutes later and saw the entire team in a circle stretching.
They're looking pretty cohesive and legitimate if you ask me!
